Today we think of aluminum as a lightweight material, but what if we told you that there is a material that is 30% lighter than aluminum? Probably one of the best materials for car frames. As the world strives to reduce emissions and improve the performance of lightweight materials used in vehicles, magnesium alloy materials may play a key role. If your project requires a lightweight die casting with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, magnesium die casting is the logical choice.
What is magnesium?
Magnesium is a base material for a variety of alloys. AZ91D is the most common die casting magnesium alloy. It has very good castability and toughness, making it an ideal material for the manufacture of lightweight, highly durable parts.
Why Choose Magnesium For Die Casting Project?
Compared to steel, magnesium is 75% lighter with no appreciable loss of strength. It is a good material for the production of complex thin-walled net shape or near net shape castings, with high dimensional stability. Magnesium castings can meet tight tolerances that are difficult or impossible to achieve with steel. Molding costs for magnesium castings can be lower because multiple parts can be easily integrated into one assembly. This also increases the stiffness of the part, reducing welding and assembly costs. Compared to aluminum, magnesium is 33% lighter, has similar or better mechanical properties, and is easier to process. Magnesium has stronger corrosion resistance and is more suitable for large, thin-walled, mesh and complex parts.
Magnesium is stronger and tougher than the most advanced engineering plastics. It also offers higher abrasion resistance, higher temperature resistance and better energy absorption/impact properties.
We help customers select alloys based on the environment in which the component will play a role in the performance requirements of the assembly.
AZ91D: The most commonly used alloy in high pressure die casting. It has good strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance and excellent casting ability.
The alloy is commonly used in powertrain and mechanical parts where toughness is more important than deformability.
AM60B: Commonly used in automotive die-casting safety parts, such as instrument panel structure, seat frame. The alloy has excellent ductility, energy absorption, strength and castability.
AM50: This alloy has a lower aluminum content than AM60, which further improves ductility, but has slightly lower strength and slightly poorer castability.
Typically used when performance requires elongation in excess of AM60.
Choosing magnesium alloy material is stronger, harder and more environmentally friendly. To learn more about magnesium alloys, please visit http://www.zhongmei-tech.com/.
