Magnesium alloy is the lightest metal structure material, with high specific strength, excellent damping, shock absorption and noise reduction performance, good casting, machining and surface decoration performance, easy recovery and other advantages. The application of magnesium alloy in the steering wheel can achieve lightweight, and reduce the vibration of the road and control system. At the same time, when accidents occur, the magnesium alloy steering wheel can absorb more energy to ensure the safety of the driver, so it has the performance advantages that the traditional steering wheel, such as low carbon steel and engineering plastics, cannot compare. Therefore, it will be a safe and lightweight choice and trend to use magnesium alloy instead of other traditional materials such as steel and aluminum alloy to make automotive steering wheel skeleton.

With aluminum as the main alloying element, the toughness of the alloy gradually increases with the decrease of aluminum content. Therefore, the low-aluminum AM series magnesium alloy is more suitable for steering wheel and other safety parts. But, as the aluminum content is reduced, to a certain extent reduce the alloy casting, so, when choosing to achieve the required mechanical properties of alloy, shall ensure that high aluminum content in order to make sure its castability, therefore, choose high strength and good toughness and has certain casting properties of AM60B as the material of the steering wheel. According to the analysis of the data searched from the Internet, the series of magnesium alloys have good mechanical properties, elastic modulus E can reach 45 GPa, Poisson’s ratio ε is 0. 35, tensile strength σb≥200MPa, yield strength σs≥13OMPa, elongation δ≥6% (50mm standard distance). In weight, compared with the traditional iron, aluminum alloy in the material to reduce more than 30%; The process qualification rate of magnesium alloy steering wheel is equivalent to that of aluminum alloy steering wheel, reaching more than 85%; The performance is exactly what the steering wheel requires.
