The application of magnesium alloy in the steering wheel can achieve lightweight, and reduce the vibration of the road and control system. At the same time, when accidents occur, the magnesium alloy steering wheel can absorb more energy to ensure the safety of the driver, so it has the performance advantages that the traditional steering wheel, such as low carbon steel and engineering plastics, cannot compare. Therefore, it will be a safe and lightweight choice and trend to use magnesium alloy instead of other traditional materials such as steel and aluminum alloy to make automotive steering wheel skeleton.

With aluminum as the main alloying element, the toughness of the alloy gradually increases with the decrease of aluminum content. Therefore, the low-aluminum AM series magnesium alloy is more suitable for steering wheel and other safety parts. But, as the aluminum content is reduced, to a certain extent reduce the alloy casting, so, when choosing to achieve the required mechanical properties of alloy, shall ensure that high aluminum content in order to make sure its castability, therefore, choose high strength and good toughness and has certain casting properties of AM60B as the material of the steering wheel.
