What is semi-solid die-casting and what is the advantage of it?

In the early 1970s, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proposed the concept of metal  thixomolding molding based on the rheological properties exhibited by strong stirring of semi-solidified metals. In 1989, the American DOW Chemical Company was based on plastic injection. On the invention of magnesium alloy  thixomolding technology.

Compared with ordinary die casting, the difference between thixomolding die casting is that, first, its molding form is to die-cast magnesium chips from solid state into  thixomolding state, and then form a solid magnesium alloy structure. Traditional die-casting requires a block of magnesium ingots to be melted into a liquid and then cooled into a solid state.

Second, it does not require SF6 as a shielding gas. SF6 is a greenhouse gas equivalent to 20,000 times carbon dioxide, which has an impact on the environment. Traditional die-casting production processes require this gas to protect metals.

The third is that it does not damage the structure of the metal, and the surface of the product made is more delicate and high in precision.

Fourth, it has less damage to the mold, making the mold longer service life and saving production costs.

Fifth, the strength of the product produced by it is higher than that of traditional die casting

At present, the semi-solid process is mainly used in industries with precise product structure and complex shape, such as automobiles, 3C products, outdoor sports products, etc.

During die casting, molten metal—usually non-ferrous materials including magnesium, zinc, copper, and most commonly aluminum—is forced into a mold using high hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. Known in the industry as molds, these molds are made of high-quality tool steel and can produce extremely complex parts and provide high precision and repeatability to the process. Due to the versatility of the process, die casting produces more castings than any other casting process.

 

At present, the wide application of this process mainly has the following bottlenecks:

The first is the high investment cost of equipment.

The second is that there are relatively few professionals in related industries.

The third is that there are fewer equipment manufacturers, and there are fewer options for purchasing equipment.

The fourth point is the lack of more in-depth applied research.

At present, zhongmei has six semi-solid-state equipment, and the products produced include the drone casing of the internationally renowned drone brand DJI, the mobile phone casing of Huawei, the display instrument panel of the Ford car, the casing and keyboard of the notebook computer, the telescope casing, etc. Tight die casting.
