magnesium aluminum alloy castings

Magnesium alloys are mixtures of magnesium (the lightest structural metal) with other metals (called alloys), usually aluminum, zinc, manganese, silicon, copper, rare earths, and zirconium. Magnesium alloys have a hexagonal lattice structure, which affects the basic properties of these alloys. Plastic deformation of the hexagonal lattice is more complex than that of cubic lattice metals such as aluminum, copper, and steel; therefore, magnesium alloys are often used as casting alloys.

Aluminum is very stable, inexpensive, and due to its sturdiness, does not bend easily under pressure. Magnesium alloys have a short solidification time. Magnesium is less stable, very expensive, and bends easily under pressure due to its softness.

Like aluminum, magnesium alloys are used in the casting of automotive parts and provide their unique mechanical and physical properties. While experiments have been carried out to replace aluminum with magnesium, it is still softer, less stable, more expensive, and bends more easily under pressure.

Although aluminum alloys take longer to solidify than magnesium alloys, their alloys provide longer mold life. Also, aluminum doesn’t require as much finishing work as magnesium. When determining the application of magnesium castings, special treatments and coatings are required.

In competing with aluminium alloys as structural materials, magnesium alloys have the advantages of low density, high strength ratio, better electromagnetic shielding properties and castability. These result in the preferential use of magnesium alloys in 3C components(Computer, Communication and Consumer product) where lightweight , heat dissipation, electromagnetic shielding is critical.also have extremely broad applications in the fields of automotive, aerospace, outdoor sports and so on.

With the high integration in 3C , removing the excessive heat produced during the operation of electronic components and heat exchangers, which causes the components to fail as a result of overheating or deformation, becomes more urgent. The demand for materials with both excellent heat dissipation and mechanical properties is increasing rapidly. Selecting materials with appropriate thermal conductivity is very important for achieving the best performance of components.

Mg alloys exhibit great potential as heat dissipation materials owing to their smaller heat capacity and better heat dissipation effects than those of Al alloys. Over the past decades, there have been some efforts devoting to enhancing the thermal conductivity of Mg alloys with a clear understanding of the fundamental heat transfer at the micro, nano and even molecular scales.

Aiming to develop a Mg alloys that can provide significantly improved thermal conductivity in comparison to the commonly used AZ91D magnesium alloys,  Zhongmei built Research Institute of Magnesium Alloy Materials jointly with the global leading expert, Prof. Pan Fusheng of Chongqing University and his team.

China Die Casting : The Manufacturing Process of Precision Parts

Die casting is a metal casting process that involves forcing molten metal under high pressure into a mold cavity. The mold cavity is created using two hardened tool steel dies. The dies are designed to produce complex shapes with high accuracy and smooth surface finishes. Die casting is commonly used to produce parts in high volume, such as automotive parts, electronic housings, and appliance parts.   The process of die casting starts with the preparation of the mold. The mold is made of two steel dies, which are machined to the desired shape and size. The dies are then assembled...
