Foundries are responsible for our current standard of living and industrial development, yet most of us know very little about it. what is casting
casting definition
Simply put, a foundry is a factory that produces castings by melting metal, pouring the liquid metal into a mold, and then solidifying it. Even if you’ve never been to a foundry and don’t even know what a foundry director looks like, you’ll be surrounded by the metal castings they produce.
Foundries don’t just produce metal products for engine, rail or plumbing components. They also make up the machine parts needed to make many of the basic consumer goods we rely on. 90% of manufactured products rely on metal castings.
casting process
In order to understand a foundry, you need to understand the casting process. The general steps involved in casting include forming, forming, melting, pouring, demolding, cleaning, trimming and inspection. The final cast shape corresponds to the injected mould, so the mould is carefully shaped with the pattern, i.e. a wood or metal replica of the object to be cast. The most common mold material is silica sand, but they can be made from a number of different materials, depending on the casting metal and the method used. Charging is one of the most dangerous operations in a foundry. Errors can be fatal.
The furnace “charges” the metal and heats it above the melting point of the metal. Once the molten metal reaches a specific pouring temperature, it will travel from the furnace through nozzles into a refractory-lined ladle. Slag or impurities will be skimmed off the top of the molten metal surface. The ladle is then tilted and molten metal is poured into the mold cavity. The mold cools, the metal solidifies, and the casting is ejected from the mold and cleaned. The cleaned casting is done by trimming, which is the process of removing excess material from the casting to meet the specified dimensions of the finished product. Depending on the casting specification, finishing can be quick and easy or very fine. Finished castings should be inspected by the foundry prior to delivery.
Foundries do more than just produce original castings. They have a lot of business, usually including part design, tool making, prototyping, machining, assembly and other after-sales services.
Cast metal manufacturers rely on different types of furnace technology. While blast furnaces are often associated with metal processing, they are actually used to extract iron and other metals from ores. Manufacturing foundries require additional furnaces to obtain metal alloys and additives and make them into specific grades of cast metal.
